Sign our open letter to City Council

We want the kind of city we can all be proud to call home, and we believe City Council has an obligation to build this home for all of us.

We are People for a Better Ottawa, a broad-based coalition of individuals and community groups across the city that wants to protect and enhance the quality of life for all residents.

This letter is to protest the planned 2009 City of Ottawa budget cuts to our city programs.  It calls for cutting bus routes, parks, arts, childcare, cultural, heritage and recreation funding by over 70% while leaving other departments such as roads and computer services (IT) relatively untouched.  These cuts will cancel our winter rinks, many bus routes, 700 subsidized childcare spaces and funding for our forest maintenance, festival, and school based nutrition programs - this is just to mention a few.  In fact, 71% of these cuts are taken from 22% of departments by budget size.

This is unbalanced and unfair.  Do not make these cuts.  We will feel them keenly in our communities.

It is important to recognize the importance of investing in arts and culture and in community programs and services that support residents to be healthy, active and engaged in the social, economic and cultural life of our city.

Do you know that all of these cuts could be avoided for only $9.62 per month, per household in the City of Ottawa? This is enough to save outdoor rinks in the winter and festival funding in the summer, along with a whole list of other existing and new programs.

WHAT TYPE OF CITY DO WE WANT TO LIVE IN AND MAYOR O’BRIEN, WHAT  TYPE OF CITY DO YOU WANT TO PRESENT TO THE WORLD!
